In 2015, SVNSET WAVES teamed up with Scotland-based producer, Ikotu, and delivered a four-track EP of experimental beats, titled “Halved”. It was received with high praise, with support from Majestic Casual and Beats One Radio. “Halved” was followed by a three-track EP “Clockwork”, released on German label prrrrrrr in 2016. Since then, Ikotu has been quietly working away, apparently putting together multiple EPs. However, aside from a few loose singles here and there, his audience has been patiently awaiting a new collection of tunes. In 2020, plans began unfolding between prrrrrrr and SVNSET WAVES to collaboratively release a new collection of Ikotu goodness. The 6 track EP “Impenetrable Glass Box” combines Ikotu’s signature texturally rich and experimental beats with jazz and lounge-inspired live instrumentation. Oliver is also responsible for painting the artwork used for this latest release, chosen “…partly because a chaotic arrangement of saturated colours on a pitch black void seems an appropriate metaphor for many things,” he says, “and partly because it’s square.”

HALVED

“Life is such a strange thing. The constant realization of existence can be overwhelming to say the least. When SVNSET WAVES released this 4-track EP by Ikotu, I was at an incredibly dark place in my life. I remember sitting in my room with all the lights off, and listening to this EP over and over. This EP is so unique. It is emotive and expressive. It’s impending yet hopeful. This collection of music deeply resonated with me and comforted me in a time when I felt very alone. After the EP’s release, hearing stories of other people who were touched just as deeply was so inspiring to me, reminding me again that on that night in my dark room, I wasn’t really alone.
